How Long Do I have to wear my Retainer After Invisalign Treatment

For the rest of your life, you will have to wear your retainer every night you go to bed.  If you don’t, then you risk the possibility of constantly shifting teeth.

Even after you get your Invisalign treatment, your teeth will want to move back to their original position. It’s up to you to do your due diligence and wear the retainer, and stop your teeth from shifting back to their original position.

You may not have to wear the retainer every night, but you definitely have to be consistent because teeth have a tendency to move fast. If you don’t believe me, try not wearing your retainer for a week and tell me how painful it is to put the retainer back in. (Note: please don’t try not wearing your retainer for a week)

What do I do if I have Shifting Teeth After Invisalign

If you skipped out on following your Orthodontist recommendation of wearing your retainer, you should contact your Orthodontist and let them know that your teeth are shifting.

If your teeth have shifted way out of place, they may have to get you back on Invisalign for a couple more treatments.

Another option is that they will adjust your retainer so that your retainer will stop your teeth from shifting anymore out of place, then they already have.

What Options Do I have besides wearing a Removable Retainer After Invisalign

Another option is placing a Lingual bar retainer behind your bottom front teeth from canine to canine. With this option, 6 metal brackets are placed behind your front bottom teeth. These bottom teeth are the most common teeth to shift and get crowded over time.

Pro’s and Cons of Lingual Bar Retainer

Not every person is allowed this option. This option works best on someone that promises to keep good homecare at home because it is not easy to clean a lingual retainer bar.

The Plackers floss picks won’t even work to clean a lingual(Tongue-side) retainer bar. Because the lingual brackets are on the tongue side of your teeth, the space between each bracket is smaller than wearing braces.

With regular braces, you can get your Placker’s Orthopick Flosser between the brackets easy because of the large space between the brackets, right?

With the lingual bar, you have to be very diligent in using a floss threader to keep your teeth clean.

Another con of the lingual bar is that they can break if you eat something. Then, you have to shift your entire day to get these brackets placed back on.

The great thing about Lingual Retainer Bars are that you don’t have to remove them from your mouth every night which is amazing.
