10 Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween – 2019

It’s October, so that means it’s time for pumpkin carvings, costume shopping and the dreaded candy-mania for kids.  Parents, get ready for some hyper kids and some fun trick or treating.

These Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween are meant to help you and your kids get through the Halloween holidays with the help of some healthy alternatives to Halloween’s normal Sugar Bug Filled days.

We realize everyone will still eat sugar, chocolate and candycorn, but we’re hoping these tips will help you protect yourself more than last year. Let us know if you have any questions in the comments. Happy Halloween !!

Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween #1 :

Eat your candy all at once, rather than snacking randomly throughout the day.

Cavities are more likely to happen if you eat sugary snacks over a longer period of time compared to eating all your candy in one sitting.

When you eat sugary snacks, the sugar bugs will release acid on your teeth and break down the enamel. This release of acid on your teeth will create a more acidic environment ( Called Demineralization or the breakdown of your Enamel Crystals ) in your mouth, which will increase the likelihood of a cavities.

Your Mouth takes approximately 3-4 hours to remineralize your enamel molecules to a balanced ph of 7.

Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween #2 :

Decorate healthy snacks (like apples and cellery ) to look like spooky characters instead of candy for halloween

Sugary snacks can cause cavities, so have fun in a healthier and more nutritious way this year.

Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween #3 :

Drink Tap Water Throughout the day, and skip the sugary drinks like pepsi and root beer.

Tap water contains fluoride, which will strengthen your enamel and decrease the chances of getting Cavities.

Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween #4 :

Buy orange plastic cups, and use Black ink to draw pumpkin Faces on them. Fill ’em up with water, and drink throughout the day.

Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween #5 :

Brush 2 times per day using an ADA approved Toothbrush and ADA approved Toothpaste.

Brushing twice a day is recommended by the ADA to keep your teeth and gums happy, healthy, and cavity free. If you can brush after every meal, that would be ideal.

Clean between your teeth with Ortho Floss Picks

Whether you have braces or not, Floss picks are great to travel with. They are small, and most of them come with a carrying case for you to slip them into your purse, backpack or pocket.

How to use Plackers Orthopick Flosser For Braces

7. Clean your mouth with a Water Flosser

Water Flossers work great for everyone, except for kids under 12 generally. They can be messy if you don’t know how they work, but they are great for firming up your gums, and flushing out your gums.

If you’re going to be eating Sticky candy all day, this should definitely be at the top of your list of things to get.

According to Waterpik’s Study, “The Effect of a Dental Water Jet with Orthodontic Tip on Plaque and Bleeding in Adolescent Orthodontic Patients with Fixed Appliances”, Sharma NC, Lyle DM, Qaqish JG finds that

“….The Waterpik® Water Flosser is 3X as Effective as String Floss for Orthodontic Patients”

Water Flossers can be a great asset to preventing those with braces to give up on their Oral Health Care Routine, so keep this in mind when thinking about these Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween.

8. Limit Sugary Snacks to one time per day.

The more frequent your mouth is exposed to sugar and sugar bugs, the more likely your mouth will be at a lower PH. This lower PH in your mouth makes it easier for Cavities to develop and sugar bugs to damage your tooth enamel.

9. After eating any sugary snacks, drink or rinse out your mouth with tap water, and wait at least 30 minutes to brush your teeth.

Brushing your teeth right after you eat sugary snacks can actually damage your teeth. The sugary snacks temporarily weakens your enamel, and your toothbrush can actually damage your enamel while it’s weak.

The best thing is to wait 30 minutes and drink water, so your enamel and mouth PH can get closer to neutral ph. There will be less damage to your teeth this way

10. Chew Sugar Free Gum or Gum containing Xylitol

Xylitol is fake sugar that Sugar bugs can not diegest. Sugar bugs that try to digest Xylitol will die trying to metabolize Xylitol, which can actually help protect you from cavities.

Mouthhealthy website says that some studies have evidence that “chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals can help prevent tooth decay.”

Is it ever too late to start flossing?

No, it's never too late to start flossing as long as you have teeth in your mouth. It's also never too late to get braces in order to straighten your teeth.

What happens if you never floss?

You can develop Periodontal disease which destroys the Connective tissue attachment that connects your Tooth to your Jaw Bone. Once this attachment is gone, your teeth will become movable, and fall out.

Plackers Floss For Braces – Orthopick Flossers

What is Plackers Floss For Braces ?

Plackers Floss For Braces is also referred to as a Dental Floss Ortho Pick, Dental Floss Pick or as Orthopick Flossers.

Have you ever had to use a threader and floss to clean your teeth? If so, you know that cleaning your teeth is probably what you will be doing all night on your weekends because it really does take forever to get done.

With the invention of Plackers Floss, you won’t ever have to thread floss again,

Plackers Orthopick Flossers will make your life so much easier.

Are you wondering why Plackers Floss ( for braces ) is referred to as Orthopick Flossers ?

  • Ortho – people that have braces
  • Pick – plastic stick that you use to pick food out of your teeth, so they call it an Orthopick.

ANATOMY OF Orthopick Flossers

The Orthopick is made up of three ends.

One end contains This long stick ( AKA handle ), which  is connected to two small plastic ends holding one piece of floss. One plastic end ( AKA arm) is thicker, and one plastic end is thinner.

The thinner end allows you to shimmy under the wire of your braces.

The two different plastic widths really make a huge difference when you try and slide the floss between teeth and under the bracket wire.

plackers floss for braces
Plackers floss  also includes a comfortable grip on the handle so the device won’t slip away from your fingers while using the device. GREAT FOR ON THE GO !!!

For more information on How to Floss with braces with Floss Threaders, or different options on How to floss with braces without floss threaders, please click the link here.

Take these Plackers Orthopick Flossers on the Go anywhere and everywhere .

When you get food stuck in your teeth when you’re in public places like the movie theatre while eating popcorn, you can get that stuff out quickly.

How to use Plackers Floss For Braces

All you need to do is shimmy the thinner plastic end down between the teeth and under the metal braces wire. Then proceed to do the proper C-shape flossing method on each side of your teeth.

Because the flatter and thinner plastic head goes under the brace wire, you can eventually cut down the time it takes to complete your Dental hygiene routine for the day.

DO NOT FORCE THE Plackers Orthopick Flossers under your bracket if it does not fit. Double check with your Orthodontist if you notice the device not able to reach under the bracket wires.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN PURCHASING ANY FLOSS FOR BRACES

I was putting up links to various Plackers Floss ( AKA Orthopicks ) for Braces , and I noticed that I almost put Plackers floss that was NOT FOR BRACES.

This concerns me because I know it is something that is easy to forget, so I have some quick tips for you to remember before purchasing these Orthopicks.

When you are purchasing any type of these Floss for braces, make sure that you see 2 different plastic ends. It can be very frustrating to purchase something, and then have to send it back because of the detail.

Heres a picture of what to look for when making your purchase for Placers Orthopicks:

  • Stay away from two identical plastic ends are even and thick
  • Make sure there are two different sized ( thickness of plastic ends ) so the device will be able to  fit under your bracket wire.

This won’t be able to fit between your brackets, so make sure the plastic ends are 2 different widths.

Plackers Micro Mint Dental Floss Picks – NOT FOR BRACES – ENDS ARE BOTH THICK

It is Very important to make sure that the Plackers Floss ( or any Floss pick )for braces brand that you buy has two different thicknesses.

Why?

This is the only way to make sure that you can use these Orthopicks for Braces.

Sensitive Teeth From Grinding at night ?

Struggling with Sensitive Teeth From Grinding ?

Most people don’t even know they grind their teeth unless they hear about signs of wear by their dental professional, or their significant other hears them grinding when they sleep.

Sensitive teeth from grinding is caused by a disorder called bruxism. Bruxism is a term used to describe a sleep disorder in which a person is grinding their teeth uncontrollably at night due to stress or a number of other reasons. Bruxism (AKA teeth grinding) can cause Sensitive Teeth From Grinding, headaches in the morning  from clenching jaw in sleep, as well as a number of other problems with your teeth.

Causes Of Teeth Grinding During Sleep

Side Effects Of Grinding Teeth At Night –

Why is it harmful to Grind My Teeth ?

Many people grind their teeth ( AKA Bruxism ) at night, which can lead to some very negative consequences for your mouth such as

  • cracked/ fractured teeth / broken or loose teeth

  • need for crowns,
  • wearing down tops of the teeth of the enamel exposing the dentin ( recession ) which can lead to sensitivity of your teeth.
wearing down tops of the teeth of the enamel exposing the dentin which can lead to sensitivity of your teeth.
Source
  • Can change appearance of your face due to excessive use of the jaw muscles.
  • Abfraction – v-shaped notches at the tooth root causing pieces of enamel to fracture off located between tooth and root which exposes the dentin. This causes recession of the gums , a faster progression of periodontal disease as well as tooth sensitivity to temperature.

Jaw Pain From Clenching Teeth :

You may find yourself with a sore jaw in the morning due to grinding your teeth all night long. Excessive clenching and grinding of your teeth at night can make your jaw sore because of the constant working of the muscles used to chew on your teeth during the night.

Sensitive Teeth From Clenching :

Clenching at night (while sleeping) can cause severe sensitive Teeth From Grinding such as cracked / broken teeth, the need for crowns, wearing down of the enamel exposing the dentin. When the dentin of the tooth is exposed, you may experience teeth sensitivity to temperature including either hot or cold or both.

Sleep Bruxism Treatment

How to FIX Sensitive Teeth From Grinding:

The best way to avoid further damage from bruxism is the use of a Nightguard. Nightguards can help prevent future dentin exposure, but they can not reverse the dentin exposure.

A nightguard is usually made of a plastic material, and this device is usually placed on your upper teeth.  When you are grinding your teeth, the night guard acts as a plastic barrier between the top and bottom of your teeth which lessens the amount of wear that was happening on the tops of your teeth, which was exposing the dentin and causing the teeth sensitivity from grinding.

Because of the plastic cushion of the nightguard sits between the teeth at night, it restricts the amount of force your teeth are able to use to grind, which softens the amount of work for your jaw muscles. This helps relieve future tension headaches as well as jaw pain in the mornings after multiple nights of grinding.

Night guards can also be called dental guards, mouth guards, bite plate, bite splints.

There are many different types of Nightguards, and the price can range from as low as $15, which you can buy in the store or they can cost upwards to $600 depending on the type of insurance coverage that you have.

Because bruxism can sometimes be caused by an imperfect bite, sometimes the issue may be fixed with Orthodontics such as Invisalign or Braces.

TYPES of NIGHT GUARD FOR CLENCHING AND TEETH GRINDING

Nightguards can be bought over the counter from Amazon or a mold of your mouth can be taken by your Dental Office. It is usually more expensive to get a Nightguard done from your Dental Office, but sometimes your Dental insurance will cover 50% to 100% depending on your dental insurance plan.

It’s always best to consult with your DDS before purchasing a Nightguard for personal use.

cracked, fractured teeth , broken or loose teeth need for crowns, wearing down tops of the teeth of the enamel exposing the dentin ( recession ) which can lead to sensitivity of your teeth.

What is abfraction?

V shaped notches at the tooth root causing pieces of enamel to fracture off located between tooth and root which exposes the dentin. This causes recession of the gums , a faster progression of periodontal disease as well as tooth sensitivity to temperature.

Why Do I wake up with a Sore Jaw Every Morning?

You may find yourself with a sore jaw in the morning due to grinding your teeth all night long. Excessive clenching and grinding of your teeth at night can make your jaw sore because of the constant working of the muscles used to chew on your teeth during the night.

How can I help prevent Sensitivity from Grinding in the future?

Because bruxism can sometimes be caused by an imperfect bite, sometimes the issue may be fixed with Orthodontics such as Invisalign or Braces. A nightguard can help. It is usually made of a plastic material, and this device is usually placed on your upper teeth. When you are grinding your teeth, the night guard acts as a plastic barrier between the top and bottom of your teeth which lessens the amount of wear that was happening on the tops of your teeth, which was exposing the dentin and causing the teeth sensitivity from grinding. This helps relieve future tension headaches as well as jaw pain in the mornings after multiple nights of grinding.

What is a soft Nightguard?

This night guard is used for mild grinders, and can actually do more harm than good if you are a severe grinder. A very popular choice for those that grind their teeth mildy at night.

What are the Pros of Soft Nightguards?

Most comfortable Nightguard of all the other types of Nightguards. Easiest to get used to wearing. Made of Flexible Rubber Usually lasts 6 months to 2 years Cheaper than the other night guards available from your DDS can be bought at most sporting good stores and department stores Custom made Nightguard can be very comfortable if used often Can be made by your DDS or be store bought helps prevent muscle soreness, headaches in the morning as well as jaw pain

What are the cons of Soft Nightguards?

Can't use this Nightguard forever, should be replaced once it's worn down Some people can chew through this NightGuard pretty fast Warranty usually only lasts 6 months Store-bought Nightguard is usually one size fits all - may be uncomfortable due to one size fits all Thicker stock or boil & bite guards may actually cause grinding

What are Dual Laminate NightGuards?

For moderate to heavy grinders - Soft plastic is used on the inside, and hard plastic is used on the outside.

Are Dual Laminate NightGuards for moderate to Heavy Grinders?

For moderate to heavy grinders - Soft plastic is used on the inside, and hard plastic is used on the outside. Handles heavy (not severe) clenching and grinding Lasts longer than Soft Nightguards Moderately more comfortable than Hard Night guard, but not as comfortable as soft Night Guards can be made by your Dentist or Bought OTC

What are the cons of Dual Laminate Nightguards?

These guards are a little thicker compared to soft Night guards. Not good for severe grinders

Are Hard Night Guards for Severe Grinders?

Can withstand the most force of all the other Nightguards on the market Best Warranty

What are the cons of Hard Nightguards?

Thickest type of Nightguard Must be made by your DDS Most Expensive

Dental Signs Of Sleep Apnea

Dental signs of sleep apnea

Some common Dental signs of people with sleep apnea include cracked or broken teeth, grinding your teeth at night, worn down front and back teeth, or frequent or chronic headaches.

If you are experiencing any of these dental issues, you should contact your Physician or Dentist to get tested for sleep apnea.

You Physician or Dentist may want you to participate in a sleep study, which will measure the amount of oxygen you’re receiving per night using a pulse oximeter.

Common Signs of Sleep Apnea

Are you experiencing Jaw Pain when you wake up in the morning? Has anyone ever told you that you snore or are you waking up feeling like you really never took a nap at all?

Do you get up more than once a night to go to the restroom ? And is it difficult concentrating during the day because you feel tired.

If you are experience some of these symptoms then, you may have Sleep apnea.

Risk Factors For sleep apnea

Overweight(Most common Cause of Sleep Apnea)

You are at a higher risk of developing sleep apnea if you are overweight because your throat and tongue will relax which will end up blocking your airway. This prevents your breathing, and can lead to death.

Age(being over 60 years old)

Sensitive teeth from Grinding

Narrow airway

High Blood Pressure

Smoking

White Coated Tongue

Diabetes

Family History of Sleep Apnea

Small Narrow Jaw

Alcohol Consumption

Large Tonsils

Being a Male

Hypothyroidism

Sleep Apnea And Tooth Decay – Is this a Dental Sign of Sleep Apnea?

Since people with sleep apnea are gasping for air, their mouth is constantly being exposed to air.  This causes your mouth to get dry, and your protective saliva is no longer being used to protect your teeth.

A balanced PH in your mouth is usually 7. When your mouth PH goes below 5.5, you become susceptible to Cavities.

This can happen when your mouth dries out from Sleep Apnea, snoring, medications, etc.

HOW TO PREVENT Tooth Decay while Using CPAP

The CPAP is using forced air to help you breathe, and some people would argue that you will develop Cavities from the forced air drying out your mouth.

The way to prevent the dryness of the mouth while using the CPAP is to use the humidifier that your machine comes with. The humidifier will provide moisture and prevent the drying of the mouth, and help prevent cavities.

Another solution is to get FL varnish when you go to the DDS in order to strengthen the enamel and Dentin of your teeth.

Can a dentist order a sleep study For Dental Signs of Sleep Apnea

In their article,”The Role of Dentists in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Consensus and Controversy”, S. Quan MD and W. Schmidt state,

“…patients with symptoms of OSA must have a face-to-face evaluation by a sleep medicine physician to diagnose OSA,…and that dentists—even those certified by the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM)—are not qualified to diagnose OSA”

Although this article states that the Dentists can not officially diagnose sleep apnea, they can be incredibly helpful in referring those with possible airway issues to those that can help diagnose Sleep apnea.

In their article,”The Role of Dentists in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Consensus and Controversy”, S. Quan MD and W. Schmidt state,

“….dentists can recognize a small upper airway and other anatomic risk factors for OSA, and use the opportunity to identify potential patients through use of simple screening questions and/or questionnaires. This can help reduce the problem of under-diagnosis of OSA.”

Risk factors noted earlier are all used by Dentists in order to refer patients with possible Sleep Apnea to the proper Doctor for diagnosis.

There are also some Dental Appliances that can be made in order to help patients with Sleep Apnea.

SNORE GUARD When you have Dental Signs of Sleep Apnea

Snore guard - Dental Signs of Sleep Apnea

Snore guards work by pulling the lower jaw forward, which helps prevent the jaw from falling backward which would normally close the airway space. This allows easier breathing during the night for the patient.

Because this device is worn on your teeth, it should be worn nightly. If not worn nightly, your teeth may shift over time, and it won’t fit comfortably.

QUIP VS BOKA Toothbrush Subscriptions

Toothbrush Subscriptions QUIP VS BOKA is what we will discuss in this article. We will examine considerations for use, properties enclosed as well as what to discuss with your Dental Professional before purchasing.

Does it surprise you that 90% of all patients that ACTUALLY go to the Dentist don’t floss their teeth?

If there was a service that regularly sent out Dental packages to your house every month, which included a new roll of Floss, a brand new sparkling toothbrush, and some awesome new mouthwash, then do you think you might get excited about your oral health?

Most people get excited about novelty items like the gadget spinner, or the new Gameboy, but when the novelty feeling of it wears off, what happens?

We just tend to stop using it because it becomes boring.

It’s not surprising that over 50 percent of Americans have some form of Periodontal disease. Using the same toothbrush and floss is boring, right.

Because we look at our oral care as a chore, we don’t get excited or really ever notice a difference. If it doesn’t appeal to the color of our teeth, we won’t care.

We will get excited about things that will give us something special to think about, like Invisalign because we have a dream of having that perfect smile with straight teeth, or teeth whitening, which will give us that white smile and appearance.

If you break a tooth, especially the front one, you are motivated to go to the Dentist because it threatens the image in our heads of that perfect smile.

This article is being written because I’m hoping to get you as well as myself excited about new and exciting oral health services coming onto the market. There are one’s that are promoting their own products, and that can be a good or bad thing.

QUIP VS BOKA and Other Dental PRoducts

There are many new products coming onto the market, which you can try, and there is a lot of hype with regards to a bright smile, like charcoal. But, where are the studies? or the long term effects of these products?

As a consumer, every time you get onto the internet, marketers are targeting you. It’s your job to do the research, and pick the product that is right for you.

What To Check before purchasing a Toothbrush Subscription

The following subscriptions might sound great, and cheap too, but if you get whitening services, and you have periodontal disease along with tooth sensitivity, your teeth will become more sensitive. Ask your healthcare provider if these services will be beneficial before buying something, or at least do the research, to find out what the naysayers of these products say.

Yelp has a service that delivers food, which is wonderful, but you’re paying a middleman fee of an extra 3-5$ every time you order compared to ordering directly from the restaurant page.

Their Story:

A Dentist in New York had an idea.

It was to create the cheapest electric toothbrush which would combat inadequate brushing time, stop patients from brushing too hard, (which causes recession), and replacement of the toothbrush head at least every 3 months

These issues resonate with the message Professional Dental team members convey to their patients on a regular basis, but patients often neglect the advice. With these goals in mind, this New York Dentist has created a system that actually helps combat all these problems.

Sonicare Toothbrushes And QUIP VS BOKA

Sonicare and Phillips Electric toothbrushes are the most expensive and idealized toothbrushes on the market because of what they offer.

They have bristles that can move 40, 000 times per second, and the heads are replaceable, and they even have an ultraviolet cleaning system for your toothbrush head when not in use.

Not to mention their great Sonicare Warranty that offers 90 day money back guarantee,

Sonicare also give you 24 months to replace it if your Philips Sonicare becomes faulty.

And…

Philips Sonicare has a system for replacing your toothbrush head every 3 months.

Seriously, in today’s world,  it is so much more convenient to order on Amazon or an online website, and order a replacement toothbrush head.

Sonicare has created a great platform for getting replacement brushes, so I think you should check them out before making a decision.

Whitening Products for Sensitive Teeth

Whitening Products for Sensitive Teeth can be a tricky subject depending on whether you have discovered the root cause of the sensitivity.

Using a whitening product can hurt you in the long run and cause more damage to your teeth if you’re not careful.

It’s always the safest route to talk with your Dental Healthcare provider regarding the use of Whitening products.

If you have sensitivity, it makes it even more important to discuss the Whitening products with your provider.

Do you want to Whiten your teeth, but …. you …..

have sensitive teeth and gums, and visit the Dentist on a regular basis?

Here are some Whitening Products you can try after discovering the root cause of your sensitivity.

How does Tooth Sensitivity start?

It starts as Gingivitis(bleeding gums), then progresses to Periodontal disease (the bone that surrounds your tooth starts receding) which exposes the root of your tooth.

Unfortunately, once the bone starts receding, the bone loss can not be reversed.

This exposed root is called Dentin and has thousands and thousands of microtubules containing nerves, and these tubules expand and contract in the presence of cold or hot water, which can cause quick bursts of pain.

Other causes can be from a cracked tooth, erosion, or grinding of your teeth causing abfraction.

IF I HAVE SENSITIVE TEETH, IS IT SAFE TO WHITEN MY TEETH?

It depends because trying to whiten your teeth with recession can actually cause your pain to get worse. If you have a cavity that needs to be filled or any cracked/ broken teeth, it can cause your sensitivity to become even worst.

Most people with sensitive teeth should actually fix the root cause of their sensitivity before they start whitening their teeth.  If the sensitivity is caused by the recession, there are toothpaste people can try such as Pro-enamel or Sensodyne. For these tubes of toothpaste to work, you have to take them every day for at least 2 weeks before they take effect.

Other common procedures in the dental office are Fluoride Varnish applied once every visit.  Fluoride varnish will cover up those tubules, and really help eliminate the pain. Your dentist can also offer you Prescription toothpaste such as Prevident 5000 offered by Colgate.

Teeth Whitening products for those with Sensitive teeth

Crest has come up with a new product, Crest 3D White Whitestrips Gentle Routine which offers subtle whitening in a mild formula, in only five minutes per day.

This product can be tried if the sensitivity is mild. If the sensitivity is severe, I would recommend to discontinue this product or not start this product at all.

What’s nice about this home whitening product is that it’s only 5 minutes a day compared to most other products which is 30 minutes a day.

If you are going to try to whiten your teeth and you have sensitive teeth, the best recommendation is to get rid of the sensitivity first. Either way, while using the whitening product, you should always be using sensitivity toothpaste as part of your normal Oral Hygiene routine.
